Title
Flower Cluster
Artist
Ken Powers
Medium
Painting - Watercolor On Paper
Description
This is another experiment with a floral cluster against a very dark background. I added a bit of texture to create a satin-like effect to the background and tried to leave a lot of highlights in the flowers to create a lot of contrast. The original piece is 13.75"x9.75" and is painted with Rublev and Winsor & Newton watercolor paints on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper.

I love your old antique locks and keys, but you do a powerful flower, too. I just love these.

Really strong work Ken. Good strong smooth black really kicks out the contrasting flowers.
Ken Powers replied:
Thank you very much William! I had fun going for an extremely contrasty painting this time.

Ken, what kind of paper do you use? It supports the dark back ground beautifully without sucking the life out of it! Another stunner.
Ken Powers replied:
Thank you Sandra! I have been using Arches 140# cold-pressed paper for nearly all my paintings. Although, occasionally I will use the Sennelier 140# cold-pressed paper as they sent me 60 sheets to thank me for participating in a blind paint experiment. The Sennelier doesn't have quite as much texture though.

Now see, Ken, you really did top the other one you recently completed! That dark background so makes the flower pop right out of the painting. I think the secret is your very light highlights versus a very dark background - beautiful!
Ken Powers replied:
Thank you Bette! I don't know if it is possible to get any greater contrast than white paper against a nearly black background. I may continue experimenting with this. It is definitely a lot of fun!
Artcadia, Fl - United States
Quite lovely Ken - it is so vibrant and taken on an almost digital quality. Much better than of course.
Ken Powers replied:
Thank you Sibby! I think the extreme contrast aids in the nearly digital quality of the image, don't you?
Remington, VA - United States
Very nice, I love the highlights, good work.
Ken Powers replied:
Thank you Dessie. I was once again trying to go for a high-contrast appearance by keeping some very light areas.
Covington, Oh - United States
Beautiful, Ken! Those pinks really pop!
Ken Powers replied:
Thank you Marsha! I was able to finally get some Opera Rose from the store. I like it better than the Permanent Rose from Winsor
