The four presidents depicted on Mt Rushmore were selected because they represented the most important events in the history of the US up to that point. Abraham Lincoln was chosen by the sculptor Guzon Borglum to represent the preservation of the United States. Mount Rushmore National Memorial is located near Keystone, in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. The roughly 60-ft.-high granite carvings were done between 1927 and 1941 and also depict U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt, representing the nation’s birth, growth, and development, respectively. The idea of carving noted figures into the mountains was conceived in order to bring tourism to the area. The location that was ultimately chosen was done so in consultation with the Lakota Sioux who consider the Black Hills to be sacred ground. It had good rock quality for carving and also the advantage of the southeast sun exposure as can be appreciated here!
