I couldn’t pass through Oklahoma City OK and not make a short side trip to see an actual lighthouse in the middle of the country! The Lighhouse at East Wharf marks the entrance to a marina in a commercial development on Lake Hefner, on the north side of Oklahoma City. Lake Hefner attraction inspired by a 1700s New England lighthouse. The 36’ tall hexagonal lighthouse was erected using the "tilt-up" technique, whereby the concrete panels are poured on the job site using a casting bed, and then lifted into place using cranes. In an area subject to tornados, the lighthouse is just as sturdy as those on the coast. One website said that East Wharf Lighthouse was inspired by Brant Point Lighthouse (MA), the second oldest lighthouse in the country. (Frankly, I can’t see why. Brant Point is neither hexagonal nor concrete). Built in 1999, the lighthouse is now a member of the U.S. Lighthouse Society.
