Title
Sennelier Tulips
Artist
Ken Powers
Medium
Painting - Watercolor On Paper
Description
This is a composition that is very similar to one I did earlier this year with Daniel Smith watercolor paints. I wanted to do a variation on it but using the newly formulated Sennelier watercolor paints that I received in the mail a few days ago. I participated in a blind-study involving the previous Sennelier watercolor paint formulation in 2010. The results of the blind-study resulted in a reformulation of the Sennelier watercolor paint line which involved a highly concentrated paint coupled with an increase in the amount of honey in the mix. The result is a very heavily pigmented yet easy-to-work-with watercolor paint that is more vibrant than almost any other brand of paint I have used in the past. The waxiness of the previous formulation is completely gone and the work-ability of the paint is incredible. I had a great time experimenting with glazing and building the colors and complexity up in this piece. The new Sennelier paints have jumped to the top of my list of favorite watercolors. The original is 13.75"x9.75" in size and is painted on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper with Sennelier watercolor paint. [UPDATE: The original of this watercolor painting has been donated to the Ryan United Organization at http://www.ryanunited.org for a silent auction. The Ryan United Organization works across the United States to increase awareness concerning child predation and sex offender management. They also work as victim's advocates. It is an incredible organization and they deserve our support.]

You have outdone yourself with this one, Ken! Its gorgeous! Sounds like fun to participate in the blind studies and have an imput.
Ken Powers replied:
Thank you Bette! The blind-study was pretty interesting as there were different formulations of paint for each color (probably 5 of each) and each had to be tested. There were about 60 tubes to try and each had to be evaluated. It is nice the company listened and the end result is a great product.

The only thing lacking in this painting is the fragrance of the tulips and I'm not even sure about that. This is stunning, Ken and the colors truly are vibrant.
Ken Powers replied:
Thank you Marsha! Wouldn't it be cool if you could paint a fragrance in there too?
