Description
A black-necked swan rests on Lakeland, Florida's Lake Morton.
The black-necked swan (cygnus melancoryphus) is a native of southern South America, breeding in the freshwater marshs, lagoons, and lake shores of the Chilean Southern Zone, Argentina's Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, and on the Falkland Islands. It migrates northward to Paraguay and southern Brazil during South America's astral winter.
Cygnus melancoryphus feeds mainly on vegetation, insects and fish spawn. There is presently a small population of black-necked swans that were introduced on Lake Morton in Lakeland, Florida. They reside there with mute swans from England, black swans from Australia and white coscoroba swans from southern South America.
