Description
An American coot swims on Lakeland, Florida's Lake Morton.
The American Coot (fulica americana) can be found year round on the Pacific coasts of Canada and the United States and across the southern United States, down into the Caribbean and Mexico, through Central America to the northern part of South America.
They also breed in the rest of Canada and the United States.
They prefer fresh water with reeds and other aquatic vegetation, so look for them in open marshes, ponds, lakes, and sluggish rivers where these are prevalent.
Although omnivorous, their diet consists mainly of algae and other aquatic vegetation. They also eat insects, fish and other aquatic mammals and mollusks.
