Navajo Dome is a 6,489-foot (1,978-meter) summit, rising 1100 feet (330 meters) above the Fremont River in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. It's the peak on the right that looks like a Hershey's kiss. The name derives from its Navajo Sandstone composition. Navajo Dom and the Navajo Sandstone geologic layer is believed to have formed about 180 million years ago as a giant sand sea, the largest in Earth's history. Capitol Reef National Park lies in Utah’s south-central desert, an oasis of colorful sandstone cliffs, impressive domes, and soaring monoliths. The park got its name in part from the great white rock formations which resemble the U.S. Capitol building. The area was designated as a national monument in 1937 and reclassified as a national park in 1971.
