Description
The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the tallest and heaviest of penguin. The only penguin species to breed during the Antarctic winter. The female lays a single egg that will be incubated by the male to allow the female to return to the sea to feed. Upon her return, the parents take turns providing food and caring for their chick in the colony that may include thousands of individual penguins. The emperor penguins lives for an average of 20 years in the wild, with some individuals living up to 50 years of age. Emperor penguins rely on vocal calls alone to locate their own partner or chick.
This penguin is located in the Rochester Museum and Science Center in Rochester, New York and is part of the Evolutionary and Environmental Sciences Collections. The RMSCs collection of extinct passenger pigeons is one of the largest in the nation. When the University of Rochester closed out its own natural history museum, in 1954 and 1960, they donated its bird and mammal collections to the RMSC.
The background originally was a public domain photograph by David Mark from Ohio before photo manipulation. The photo is of the Arctic area with it's snow and ice and gorgeous sunsets.
