Description
"Dandelion at Loveland Pass, Colorado" by Catherine Sherman.
Dandelions, a member of the aster family, are extremely hardy. They grow in lawns, but they also have found a home in a wide range of locations, including high altitudes.
This dandelion was blooming in the rocky soil at Loveland Pass on the Continental Divide in Colorado in the Rocky Mountains.
Loveland Pass is a high mountain pass in north-central Colorado, at an elevation of 11,990 feet (3,655 m) above sea level in the Rocky Mountains of the Western United States.
Taraxacum officinale, the common dandelion (often simply called "dandelion"), is a flowering herbaceous perennial plant of the family Asteraceae (Compositae). The genus is native to Eurasia and North America, but the two commonplace species worldwide, T. officinale and T. erythrospermum, were introduced from Europe and now propagate as wildflowers. Both species are edible in their entirety. The common name dandelion (from French dent-de-lion, meaning "lion's tooth") is given to members of the genus.

Catherine Sherman replied:
Thank you very much, Lynn! I was surprised to see this dandelion at the pass, too, but if any weedy flower could survive there, it would be a dandelion!
