Description
This beautiful bird is the Kolea, as it is known in Hawai'i, and Pacific Golden Plover, elsewhere and Pluvialis fulva by its scientific name. These birds fly vast distances across the Pacific Ocean to Islands in the Pacific, such as Hawai'i twice a year. They overwinter in Hawai'i, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, Southeast Asia, and the Horn of Africa. The then return to the Arctic tundra each spring to breed. Their journeys can be over 8000 miles each way! They are truly warriors of the sky and incredible navigators to reach the places they overwinter in. Kolea are beloved in Hawai'i and many people wait eagerly for their return, which, depending on the weather in the Arctic, can arrive in the Islands as early as late August.
