I usually start with an emotion or an idea I’d like to convey, without the limitations of language.   As I lay down different textures and washes, nature collaborates with me in a call and response that fuels the direction of the painting.   The paintings are process intensive and it’s common for 10 or 20 or 30 layers to manifest in the work.   I have used recycled New Orleans theater sets to paint on for several of the paintings.   Besides the ecological relevance of reclaiming theater sets, I hope the spirit of the theater productions have in some way co-authored the...more
