Peter Herman was born and raised on a farm in North Dakota. He first became interested in photography during high-school, and after acquiring a Pentax SLR, began taking photos for the school yearbook and developing/printing B&W images in school darkroom. He continued shooting through college, taking portraits, group pictures, weddings, but after beginning his engineering career at Cummins, he let his photography interests go dormant until about 2005 when he acquired his first DSLR and started shooting scenic landscapes from around the US, but concentrating especially on rural areas in ND and WI. Many of his images were encountered while riding motorcycle down random backroads during 'golden hour', searching for that magic light falling upon beautiful rural scenes. He shoots in RAW format, so processing the image file is mandatory, but he strives to 'keep it real', with regard to image-processing and avoids pushing beyond what was experienced first-hand. His scenic-landscape work gravitates toward scenes that convey 'peacefulness', but he also enjoys shooting abandoned places, attempting to relay the solitude and sadness of those places.
Most of his work available here has been acquired via Pentax K-1 full-frame DSLR and various lenses ranging from 12mm to 1200mm focal length (fisheye to telescope), but he has also begun dabbling with infrared film photography using a medium-format Bronica rig on 120 film, and more recently, a 720nm converted Pentax K-3 DSLR.
