My first forays in photography began with the creation of black and white prints from film negatives in my high school darkroom. I put photography on hold for a number of years during my science education in college and professional school. But eventually I emerged from my intensive professional training and discovered the new equipment and the digital darkroom, and I love the freedom and creativity they afford. I am personally drawn to striking images with depth and textural qualities, and I attempt to bring these characteristics to my own work. Overall, I strive for the images that I create to be evocative, to elevate above the simply documentary, but also as to be representative of the time and place in which they were made. I currently divide my time between Ithaca, NY where my husband is an astrophysicist at Cornell University, and Davis, California, where I am on faculty at the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and so the bulk of my subjects are from these parts of the world. Similar to darkroom development in film photography, I adjust my 'digital negatives' to recreate what I felt and saw when the capture was made, and so as to optimize the images for printing. For someone to display my work in their home or professional environment is one of the greatest compliments that I can think of, and I am very appreciative.
