From the time I could use a pencil, I was drawing at the kitchen table—my family’s or that of any relative we might be visiting—instead of playing outdoors. We were not well off when I was young and my paper was often brown paper bags from the grocery store or off cuts of paper rolls from the factory where my dad worked.
