Born in Chiang Mai, Thailand, I've lived in California since high school. After many years in the San Francisco Bay Area, I moved to the northern California coast to enjoy open spaces and nature.

I paint in several modes: plein air and representational painting with oil on canvas; mixed media abstracts on paper and canvas; and painting on old wooden doors.

In addition to painting, I enjoy writing, and I've written three books about painting:

CARRY YOUR OWN JOY: The Abstract Paintings and Life of Hari E. Thomas, a San Francisco Artist ( https://store.bookbaby.com/book/Carry-Your-Own-Joy )

JOURNEY TO THE TRACKS: Industrial Landscape Paintings and Sketches of Oakland, California ( https://store.bookbaby.com/book/Journey-To-The-Tracks )

OLD PAINTED DOORS AND GATES. ( https://store.bookbaby.com/book/Old-Painted-Doors-And-Gates )

For more information about my books, please visit https://FloweringLightBooks.com

Please also visit the ASHARI GALLERIA website, (http://ashari-galleria.fineartamerica.com), showing abstract paintings by my close friend, the late Hari E.Thomas, along with a few of mine.

When I was about age seven, my father gave me a set of oil paints for my birthday and said, 'Just don't eat anything;' and I began squeezing tubes of luscious paint and working quietly with big brushes by myself.

Around age 15, I had my first serious painting study with Chinese Brush Painting Master Kan Yi Chen in Vientiane, Laos, where my family lived for two and a half years. Later in life, after leaving a PhD program in Cultural Anthropology at U.C. Berkeley, I studied art at Laney College in Oakland with great teachers, including Gary Snyder and June Steingardt. I also took up five years of studying Japanese Brush Painting with masterful Kayoko Bird in Berkeley, California.

My name, 'Asha,' was whispered to me while meditating months after the infamous Oakland Hills Firestorm of 1991 took the north-side of Montclair in Oakland. Ever since, I sign paintings with this spirit name. All my paintings and painted objects are expressions of thanks to The Great Spirit. I also heartily thank founders and staff at FineArtAmerica and Pixels for this opportunity to show and share paintings.

All works shown here are 'Copyright Carolyn J. Young,' a.k.a. Asha Carolyn Young.

Thank you for visiting, and may you be blessed on your journey. -- Asha
