A lifelong habit of journaling, illustrated with drawings, led me to study both creative writing and art. Illness halted my formal training, but the practice and study of art has continued, across a broad spectrum of medium.
Beauty in small things and harsh environments, that contrast of strength and fragility, enduring the assault of life, that is the recurring story behind all my work. There is that moment of intense beauty, the sun making everything glow, while the hawk screams nearby, unseen. That is life, full of possibility.
Courtney uses beautifully intense M. Graham watercolors made in Oregon, combining both precision in detail with loose expressive strokes and washes as she combines her love of the expressionism of Van Gogh and realism of Andrew Wyeth. Living and working in the Pacific Northwest, rain is a constant for most of the year. Watercolor is a natural in this environment, the marriage of pigment, water and paper; it embodies her world like no other medium.
3 years of art study in college gave Courtney the solid foundation for personal growth. She is fluent in many different media, including pastel, ink, charcoal and graphite, along with metal wire sculpture. Watercolor is now her primary discipline and focus.
