My love of photography started as a wee lad on one of my family's annual summer vacations to visit grandparents in Rhode island. I believe I was 8 or 9 when I discovered my grandfather's treasure trove of old National Geographic magazines. Of course being a normal boy (I think!), I saw my first exciting pictures of a woman's breasts (and please don't think of me as a sexist, misogynistic pig...I was a naturally, curious boy...still am).
After purveying and surveying the indigenous tribes of deepest, darkest Africa, it dawned on me what wonderful, beautifully photographed pictures I was beholding. A whole new world unfolded before my eyes. These N.G. photographers brought me around the world and directly taught me what a photo could do to and for people. I hope some of my photos bring, at least, a modicum of joy and inspiration to you as they have for me.

I've also included shots of some of my paintings. Over a lifetime, I've certainly enjoyed seeing some great art but only through photographs. A few years ago my sister was visiting my home and we decided to go to the Rhode Island School of Design's (RISD) art museum. Another epiphany I hadn't really experienced since my first National Geographic! The Masters, the Impressionists...But what really grabbed me were the abstracts and Avant Gard, especially Jackson Pollack. Granted, he's not for everyone but isn't that part of being an artist? Getting people to discuss and communicate with one another? For example, my brother and I were discussing a painting, 'The Scream.' I first saw a photo of this particular painting when I was young and I can still remember how shocked and scared it made me feel. Anyway, my brother thought a kindergartner could have painted it but I countered how it had made me feel the first time I'd seen it and how it still affects me feel to this day. My point being, not everyone is going to agree on a painting, a photograph or even music but if it can create discussion, then it has been a successful endeavor for whomever the artist may be. I don't get 'Rap' music. I didn't grow up in the inner city and I certainly haven't been disenfranchised by status or race. But I certainly can appreciate the artful side of the genre. It makes me think, 'therefore...I am.' Bingo!

Thank you for indulging me and, hopefully, liking some of what I've created. If you feel like it, please leave me a comment. It would be wonderful if I could bring something positive your way. Cheers and thanks again! Aloha, Max
