Description
The Electric City Trolley Museum is housed in a late 19th century mill building, beautifully restored as the museums interpretive center. In 1877 Scranton was Pennsylvania's first city with a successful pioneer trolley line and became known as the "Electric City". The facility itself is located next to the Steamtown National Historic Site and is on a long term lease from the national park service. The museum boasts a 50 seat theatre and many interactive displays that help tell the story of "The Third Rail".
The Third Rail was a semi continuous rigid conductor rail put between two rails or right alongside them to provide direct electic current.Overhead systems gained more favor through the years but todays technology has advanced to the point that bottom rails are more cost efficient than steam or diesel units.London England actually uses a four rail system at one of their lines. By eliminating the overhead structure that supports the wires it is much more visually appealing as well.
