Description
The battlefield at Gettysburg Pennsylvania is easily among my favorite locations to photograph. The history is enticing and the unspoiled terrain of so many years gone by is no different than it was during those terrible days.
As the battle raged men from both sides stepped into the pages of history.
This monument is of Brevet Major General William Wells. It is located South of Gettysburg on South Confederate Avenue on the way to the "Round Tops".
At time of the battle Wells was a Major in the First Vermont Cavalry Regiment. He led a battalion during a charge led by General Elon Farnsworth against Evander Laws Alabama Brigade and Artillery. Farnsworth was mortally wounded, Wells continued the charge and as it became futile took command of the survivors and led them back to Union lines. Farnsworth and 75 of the 225 cavalry men lost their lives.
Wells was later awarded the "Medal Of Honor" for most distinguished gallantry at Gettysburg July 3 1863.
General Farnsworth who questioned the wisdom of the charge by his superior had his bravery questioned and though he led the initial charge and died during it, received no medals.
The bronze statue was created by J. Otto Schweitzer and is one of seven to be found on the battlefield. It was so well received that his hometown in Vermont commissioned another.
Some of the information for this description was found at www.gettysburg stone sentinels as well as from the writings of author J. David Petruzzi "Hoof Beats and Cold Steel Thoughts of Civil War Cavalry.
Photo was selected for inclusion in the 79th Annual National
Exhibition of the Cooperstown Art Association.
