Description
Tinguely Fountain,
Tinguely Fountain is officially known as the Carnival Fountain (also known as Jo Siffert fountain of Jean Tinguely). This fountain containing several low-powered metal sculptures is probably Jean Tinguely's most famous work. It was a hot July summer day we came upon this incredible unique fountain. Quite the fun site to see.
The Tinguely Fountain was built in 1975-1977 on the Theatre Square and was a gift of Migros to the city of Basel. What many people don't know, is that this fountain stands on the site of the stage of the dismantled old city theater, Theaterplatz.
Did you know that the rectangular fountain has a floor area of 16 to 19 meters? How many sculptures are inside? Ten sculptures that are moved by motors and spray water jets through the air. The ten sculptures were constructed in part from pieces of the equipment of the old theater; various types of metal. The individual sculpture names are:
dr Theaterkopf, d'Spinne, dr Waggler, d'Fontääne, dr Spritzer, dr Suuser, dr Wäädel, dr Schuufler, s'Seechter, dr Querpfyffer. Enjoy! Emmy Vickers,
