I recently saw this sycamore tree standing at the edge of a soybean field near where I live. I took a bunch of photos, then I used Photoshop to create my "moon behind the tree look" for reference (that digital collage is also on my gallery - I created that simply to be my reference photo for this painting, but liked it as a photo/digital enough that I posted that one, too!).
The basic scene is drawn with a Micron pen on the rice paper. This is a very experimental piece for me in that I tried a different approach to the wax resist. Getting fine lines of hot wax onto my drawing usually proves frustrating, with blobs at the beginning of the stroke, etc. I decided to try using my wax-based Prismacolor pencils to create much of the resist on the tree branches, and it worked!!! I was very excited, because the pencils are much easier to control for me! I used a couple of pale colors to fill in all the tree branches, I placed leaves all around the top of the tree and put dots of actual hot wax on those, and fully hot-waxed the moon area. Then many (probably 5-6) washes of my colors on the sky area and the field/foreground area before getting the depth of colors I wanted. After all was dry and wax ironed off, I used colored pencils and pastel pencils to produce some contrasts in a few places on top of the watercolor.
