A beautiful purple colored Dendrobium Orchid, in square format, seen at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. The section dendrobium contains orchids that have an erect or drooping growth habit. These varieties of dendrobiums have leaves all along the canes that drop during cool, dry weather and one to five flowers form on the leafless canes in mid-winter through spring. Dendrobium varieties grow during the summer, and need warmth and heavy fertilization when the roots appear. When the weather cools in the winter, with nighttime temperatures ranging between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit, they require no water or fertilizer, but lots of light. Dendrobium friedricksianum and Dendrobium anosmum belong to the dendrobium section.

We visited the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens orchid show and were able to take pictures of these beautiful orchids. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is a 15-acre (6.1 ha) botanical garden located at 900 South Palm Avenue in Sarasota, Florida. The Gardens are located on the grounds of the former home of Marie and William Selby.
