Vertical color landscape photograph featuring the peeling bark of a large established Pacific madrone tree near the edge of Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park, in the state of Washington. Some white sky can be seen through the leaves and branches that fill the frame; no people.
According to Coniferous Forest, one source of information on trees in Washington State, the Pacific madrone has reddish-brown, scaly bark and only grows near salt water. It has broad leaves but does not lose them in winter. Also called a bayberry or strawberry tree.

Wonderful image, Connie. Madrone trees are really interesting with the peeling bark. We've been to Lake Crescent, but we missed seeing any madrones there.

Thank you, Martha. Going from the lodge toward the pier, I remember them being grouped in a small grove near the water. I had bald cypress trees for many years, and they had beautiful peeling bark too.
