Stretching 250 m from the main gate of Sensoji Temple (off the photo in the bottom left) to the main hall (upper right) is Nakamise Dori, a traditional shopping street. It is one of the oldest shopping streets in Japan, the original dating from the early 1700s. You can buy Japanese street food, souvenirs, kimonos, woodblock prints, crafts, chopsticks, tabi socks, windchimes, lanterns, fans, and swords. and other Japanese accessories in its nearly 90 shops. You can get a great view of the whole local scene, as well as of the Tokyo SkyTree from the free observation deck of the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center across the street from main gate. In the upper right is the famous 5-tiered pagoda, with a height is 53.32 meters. The original pagoda is said to have been built in 942 A.D. in the Edo period. Both Nakamise Dori and the 5-tiered pagoda were destroyed in an air raids during World War II, but then rebuilt afterward.
