Heaven and Hell. India ink and acrylic paint on a thin sheet of birch wood. Life and death, good vs. evil, heaven and hell - it is all represented in this stunning, square format, abstract landscape painting. Somewhat like an engraving, portions of the initial outline have been scratched into the surface of the wood. India ink was added to some sections and allowed to "bleed" and blend.

This is what I was thinking about when I created this little painting:

The central tree represents life. The tree of the life that each one of us have. While abstract, a figure may be seen emerging from the trunk. It is you, or me, or each one of us. The figure is reaching toward something. It may appear to be the sun, but it's colors are both warm and cool, somewhat light and somewhat dark.
Darkness continues at the root of the trees, with bright red figures representing the evil forces in our lives.

The central portion of the painting depicts a landscape, rich with rolling hills, mountains, and a bed of water with a sailboat. This is a depiction not only of the area in which I live, but choices we make in life, as we journey from one stop to the next. At the bottom right of the painting is a bronze colored figure, which represents death. The hillside above him is covered in bronze skulls. A graveyard of sorts that we all must visit. Out of the graveyard rises a golden spirit. Notice the top of the tree. There is an absence of bright red. There is no evil there, although the top is certainly not pure. The tree top represents the blend of the millions of actions we take and choices we make through our lifetime. The spirit is heading in the right direction. The choices are good.
