The Guggenheim Art Museum in Bilbao Spain is all curves and beautiful shapes. The late afternoon sun reflects off some the 33,000 titanium sheets to scatter light in all directions in an everchanging pattern throughout the day. It isn’t a far stretch to say that the opening of this museum singlehandedly made the city of Bilbao a must-visit destination in Spain. The city was in decline in the late 1900s as its major industries of shipbuilding, and coal and steel production became outdated. In the 1990s, the American Guggenheim foundation was in search of a location for a European museum. As unlikely as it seems, the declining city of Bilbao was chosen and in a short period of four years the entire area along the Nervion River was transformed. The architect Frank Gehry was chosen for the project. The rusty dockyards disappeared and were replaced by green spaces, promenades, and a gigantic framework of curved steel. Corners and straight lines disappeared, replaced by waves, arches, and curves. The museum opened in 1997 and was overrun by art and architecture fans from all over the world.
