Bilbao Spain City Hall
Photograph - Photography And Digital Art
Just when you thought the holidays were over, you travel to Europe in early January to find that the holidays don’t end until January 6, the feast of the Epiphany. So when I arrived in Bilbao Spain, there were plenty of holiday decorations still up and mobs of people at El Corte Ingles (the famous Spanish department store) shopping for their holiday celebrations. City Hall in Bilbao looked particularly festive with its cheerful bright lights banishing the winter darkness. City Hall dates from 1892 and was built in the French Second Empire style on the previous site of a convent. In the foreground (right) is a sculpture entitled Escultura Variante Ovoide which has been in front of City Hall since 2002. It is 8 m high and 6 m in diameter, weighing in at 6 tons! It is made of steel to resemble ships since Bilbao is famous for its port and for being a pioneer city in the Industrial Revolution in Spain.
