After visiting Taughannock State Park near Ithaca NY, I pulled out a map to see what else was in the area. Only 40 miles to the north, and a lovely drive on an autumn morning, was the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge at the north end of Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. It was established on September 12, 1938 as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. It also is located in the middle of one of the most active flight lanes in the Atlantic Flyway. On the day of my visit, Canada geese were in the midst of their migration and great egrets were in the shallow water areas looking for food. Great Egrets range widely over North America but mostly move south for the winter.
