In Norse mythology the greatest goddess is Freya, also known as Frigga. She is the goddess of beauty, fertility, love, sex and is the real Mother Nature of Norwegian lore.She has two great Norwegian cats and loves wild boars, so is often seen with one.

Married to the most powerful god, Odin, (also called Wodin) she has tremendous power to heal all matters of love and child-bearing. She is the daughter of Njork the sea god, the mother of Baldar, the eagle god and the step-mpther of Thor, the hammer, lightening god.

Odin goes often to the world of humans leaving Freya alone for long periods of time. Finally Freya leaves Vallhalla and goes to the world of man where she searches for Odin and is known to cry tears that turn to gold. Finally when she sees how Odin abuses and torments humans, she realizes he is not the nice god she thought him to be and she leaves him..At this point the other side of Freya becomes more visible, Her magick is powerful intuition, her courage is immense and she is one of the Valkyrie, a goddess of war, riding a chariot pulled by her two big cats.

I love the story of this goddess as she shows us the yin yang of femininity. The kind loving fertile protector of children, women, crops, animals and all of nature, and then we see the alternate side of warrior, couragous slayer of those who oppose her. The woman with the power to walk away from an abusive husband even though he is the most powerful god in her universe.

Her duality is a symbol of Mother Earth in her loving fertility she provides us a home and food, but when we abuse her, she has the ability to wipe out towns, flood lands, create fires and destroy millions of acres anywhere in the world.

I have painted her gentler side here, but am working on a yin yang mandala of her in her dual natures.
