Fluffing Up. This cute pretty Mama red bellied woodpeckers is fluffing up her plumage or feathers outside the nest cavity of this Florida palm tree trunk. It's cooler to be puffed up on a hot day! Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Melanerpes carolinus, are medium-sized woodpeckers of the family Picidae. These pale grey medium-sized cuties are found in the Southeastern USA. The strikingly barred backs and gleaming red caps of these birds and the orange around the bill are a lovely sight. The male has a bright red cap all the way to the bill, while his lady has a grey head in front of the red area, also with a touch of orange accenting her black beak. Despite the name, the red on the belly is hard to spot unless they are diving into the hole!
Woodpeckers are beneficial insect eaters and enjoy significant amount of vegetarian diet-- plant material including acorns, nuts, fruits, seeds. The couple takes turns incubating the white eggs (probably up to 4) as a team for about 2 weeks, then take care of the surviving chicks, which for this mommy was only one.
