Description

Both the male and female of this the pretty couple of red bellied woodpeckers meet up to change the guard outside the nest cavity of this Punta Gorda, Florida palm tree trunk. Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Melanerpes carolinus, are medium-sized woodpeckers of the family Picidae. These pale, medium-sized woodpeckers are found in the Southeastern USA. The strikingly barred backs and gleaming red caps of these birds and the orange around the bill are a lovely sight. The male has a bright red cap all the way to the bill, while his lady has a grey head in front of the red area, also with a touch of orange accenting her black beak. Despite the name, the red on the belly is hard to spot!
Woodpeckers are beneficial insect eaters and enjoy significant amount of vegetarian diet-- plant material including acorns, nuts, fruits, seeds. The couple takes turns incubating the white eggs (probably up to 4) as a team for about 2 weeks, then both work very hard at feeding the hatchlings and taking out the trash all day long until baby flies!
