Description
Located at 209 South LaSalle Street, the Chicago Rookery Building is considered to be the oldest high-rise in all of Chicago. The architect's John Wellborn Root and Daniel Burnham of Burnham and Root completed this building in 1888. Frank Lloyd Wright came along in 1905 and completely remodeled the lobby. The building was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1972 and the Staircase in view certainly helped with that classification; there is not a more beautiful staircase in all of Chicago. The Oriel staircase spans the entire 11 stories of the building and has glass windows allowing light from the inner court of the building.
This picture was taken from the second floor looking straight up. You can only get access to these stairs via a $5 daily tour and that tour does not allow you access to the top of the stairs. What the tour will do is take you outside of the building to show you the facade and the components of the building's architecture. Then they will then bring you inside and walk you through the lobby and the center court showing you the Root and Burnham designs and the later Wright design changes to bring the building aesthetics more in line of his times. If you’re visiting Chicago this is certainly a must-see building.
All proceeds will be donated to Chicago's Cornerstone Community Outreach in honor of photographer Richard Cleis, 1965-2021.
