Description
"Chalky High Plains Buttes, Monument Rocks National Natural Landmark, Gove County, Kansas"
Monument Rocks are a prominent geologic formation on the high plains of Western Kansas. Left over from sedimentary deposits of the Western Interior Sea Way around 80,000,000 years ago, the area is rich in Cretaceous-era fossils. Several dinosaurs, birds, turtles, aquatic reptiles, fish bones, oyster shells, coral, and shark teeth have all been discovered at the site.
Although the site would have been known to Cheyenne, Arapaho, Kiowa, Sioux, and Apache Indians who would migrate through the area with the buffalo herds, the formations were first recorded by explorers under the leadership of John Charles Frémont during their expeditions in the 1840's. Monument rocks soon after became a symbol to pioneers and settlers en route to Colorado and the Southern Rockies, along the Smoky Hill Trail. Because of a series of ongoing Indian attacks against civilian populations along the trail, Fort Monument was established around 1 mile to the southwest Monument Rocks in 1865. There are no remains of the fort today.
Nearly one century later, Monument Rocks were designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1968.
