In ancient Norse Mythology, "Bifröst" was the rainbow bridge that connected Midgard (Earth) and Asgard (the realm of the Gods).
According to the Prose Edda, of the 13th Century Medieval Icelandic Sagas, it was believed that the bridge ended in heaven at Himinbjörg. Himinbjörg was home to the God, Heimdallr, who would protect the bridge from "jötnar" (giants, elves, trolls, dwarves and other figures).
The Medieval Icelandic Sagas foretold the eventual destruction of Bifröst during Ragnarök, by forces from Múspell, (the realm of fire, and one of nine worlds on the tree of Yggdrasil).
