Description
The wild milkweed in a field meadow nearby me attracts many insects and these two Gray Ministreak butterflies were on it looking for nectar. The black wasp came up from behind them but ended up flying away and leaving the butterflies alone. The milkweed is called Antelope Horns milkweed. The wasp is called a Great Black Wasp.
Gray Ministreak Butterflies (Ministrymon azia) are very small, less than a half inch to three quarters of an inch in length. They are only seen in four states in the U.S. one of which is Texas where this one is.
The Great Black Wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus) actually pollinates flowers while it feeds itself. They are known to remove pests from plants so they are considered a beneficial insect. They dig burrows in soil to lay their eggs. They look dangerous but they do not bother humans. They will sting if threatened or handled.
Antelope Horns milkweed (Asclepias asperula) grows mostly in prairie lands in Texas. They are beneficial for monarch butterflies to survive and are always a pleasant sight to see in the meadows.
