Description
High in the mountains, the first snow has fallen.
During the night, Nature danced through the forest, sprinkling the trees with glistening white, decorating the landscape for Christmas. And though Christmas is many weeks away, there is a forest of trees to cover, an entire world of woods and mountains, meadows and rocks, to blanket in snow.
The day before, there was no snow; it was simply a late autumn afternoon high in the Wallowa Mountains of Oregon, USA. Here, along Hurricane Creek in the Eagle Cap Wilderness, the landscape is rugged, and those who visit know that one day does not necessarily look like the next.
During spring, the weather is tumultuous, tempestuous. And during autumn, though the skies often glow blue and rich, with sunlight cascading over the landscape, in the morning the story could be much different. When it comes to life in the mountains, it is wise to expect change, on a regular, seasonal basis.
The artwork, Blue Mist, is a celebration of wilderness, the remote places of solitude to which we escape when we are tired of all the noise surrounding us. In some ways, it is safe here – divorced from the world of traffic and office cubicles, media mongering and movie myths. This place, we feel, is real and permanent, not something that changes with a Tweet or an Influencer’s post or an actor/newscaster’s ponderous proclamation of doom.
But in other ways, it is not safe here, a reminder that Nature is not tame, not someone humans can command and control, dominate and destroy (although there are many perverse creatures who try). Nature is someone to respect, and the wise person does not head out into the wilderness without being prepared for a sudden snow, a violent cloudburst, a raging of the wind.
But when we are prepared, and when we accept that the entire world does not bend to human will, we greet the snow-covered Christmas trees with joy, knowing that there is something very, very right about nature, and its timelessness.
