John Haldane is a published professional artist living in Asheville, North Carolina. His artwork has been featured in fine art galleries in Arizona and North Carolina and in calendars, books, and magazines. The magazines include The Scenic, the Laurel of Asheville, The Writers & Artists Quarterly, COSTCO Magazine, Wild WNC News, Camera in the Wild Magazine, and others. He has had articles published in several of these magazines as well.
Haldane's art is unique, created using cameras, software, digital tools, and/or paints.
Haldane is a member of the Carolina Nature Photographers Association (CNPA). He has also joined the Friends of the WNC Nature Center, the North Carolina Arboretum, The Great Smoky Mountains Association (Lifetime Member), the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, and others because he believes in buying from local people and supporting local causes. He has donated art to numerous local charities.
With over 30 years of experience using Adobe Photoshop, Haldane has honed his photography development skills to go with more than 45 years of film and digital camera work.
The Asheville Regional Airport Gallery has twice shown Haldane's artwork. His piece, 'Leaves in Ice' placed in a CNPA competition called 'Abstract Appalachia,' he had a 'Uniquely Asheville' art show at the Green Sage Westgate, Asheville, in 2016 and also at the Green Sage South Jan-March 2017. It was shown again at the Green Sage Westgate Jan 10 - Sep 1, 2020. Additionally, the Uniquely Asheville collection was shown for several months in the lobby of WPVM radio, on Wall Street in Asheville. Some of his art was displayed at The Purpose Collective in Woodfin, NC. for more than a year.
Cheddar's Restaurant in Asheville purchased 3 prints that are on display in their dining area. Mission Hospital in Asheville purchased 10 of his images for display and The Loft in downtown Asheville selected two of his pieces for each of their 118 guest rooms. Yet another piece has hung in Pack's Tavern for several years.
Haldane's photographs have four times been featured in the Ray's Weather Blue Ridge Parkway Calendar and have been purchased for other calendars as well.
His art has received awards granted by various organizations and websites including CNPA.
In 2022, Haldane returned to traveling. In April and May, 2022 he took a Viking River Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam on the Rhine and Danube rivers with stops in Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands. He took two suitcases filled with hard-to-get supplies for Ukraine and left them with an organization in Budapest to distribute to small towns in Ukraine. Water purification tablets, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and around $1,500 worth of things were delivered.
In July and August, 2022, he traveled 35 days with Holland America to Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Netherlands, Ireland, and Scotland, taking over 6,000 photos, the best of which are on his site here.
In Oct-Nov, 2022 he traveled with Holland America through the South Pacific to Hawaii, French Polynesia, numerous small islands, and ended in Australia. Photos from that trip are in their own Collection on his page here.
Between Dec 20, 2022 – Jan 5, 2023 Haldane traveled on a Caribbean Holiday cruise with Holland America. The 'Caribbean Collection' contains the best photos from that trip.
A month long trip with Viking Ocean Cruises is planned for late April, 2023 to the Mediterranean Sea with stops in Italy, Greece, Turkey, and other ports.
