The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars (often shortened to just Ziggy Stardust) is the fifth studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 16 Jun 1972 (AFL1-4702). It was produced by David Bowie and Ken Scott and features contributions from the Spiders From Mars, Bowie's backing band compose of Mick Ronson, guitar/keyboards; Trevor Bolder, bass/trumpet; and Mick Woodmansey, drums. The album was recorded in Trident Studios, London.
Described as a rock opera and also a loose concept album, it is about Bowie's titular alter ego Ziggy Stardust, a fictional androgynous bisexual rock star who acts as a messenger for extraterrestrial beings. The album peaked at number 5 in the United Kingdom and number 75 in the United States. It has sold an estimated 75 million copies worldwide, making it Bowie's second best-selling album.
According to the Acclaimed Music site, Ziggy Stardust is the 16th most celebrated album of all time. Rolling Stone rated it 35th on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The album received widespread critical acclaim and in 2017 was selected to be preserved in the National Recording Registry, being deemed “culturally, historically, or artistically significant by the Library of Congress
