Description
Yellowstone is very intriguing for many reasons, not the least of which is the fumaroles or steam vents. Their colors vary from aqua to deep orange and are visible within inches of each other.
A fumarole, or steam vent, exists when a hydro-thermal feature has so little water in its system that the water boils away before reaching the surface. Steam and other gases emerge from the feature's vent, sometimes hissing or whistling. Steam vents are often super heated, with temperatures as high as 280°F (138°C), so standing close to them isn't wise.
The fumarole pictured here by Roaring Mountain is a neighbor of a variety of paint pots.
Roaring Mountain is home to fumaroles that dot an entire mountainside. They are especially dramatic on cool days when the steam is more visible.
