Description
The 1920 World Series, featuring the Brooklyn Robins (later known as the Dodgers) and the Cleveland Indians, holds a special place in baseball history. A program from this World Series, especially from the games held in Brooklyn, would be an exceptional piece of sports memorabilia, reflecting a pivotal moment in early 20th-century baseball.
Significance of the 1920 World Series:
1. Historical Context: The 1920 Series was played in the aftermath of the 1919 Black Sox Scandal, where members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of intentionally losing the World Series. This scandal significantly impacted baseball's reputation, and the 1920 Series was part of the sport's recovery process.
2. Firsts and Records: This Series saw several firsts in World Series history, including the first World Series to be played in a best-of-nine format (a format that was short-lived), the first grand slam in World Series history (hit by Cleveland's Elmer Smith), and the first World Series home run by a pitcher (Cleveland's Jim Bagby Sr.).
3. Key Players and Moments: The Series featured several notable players, including Hall of Famers like Rube Marquard and Zack Wheat for Brooklyn, and Tris Speaker and Stan Coveleski for Cleveland. Bill Wambsganss of Cleveland executed an unassisted triple play in this Series, a unique feat in World Series history.
Value of a 1920 World Series Program (Brooklyn):
- Rarity and Condition: Items from this era are quite rare, and their condition greatly affects their value. A well-preserved program could be worth a significant amount to collectors.
- Historical Importance: Memorabilia from this Series carries the legacy of a pivotal time in baseball history.
- Artistic and Cultural Value: Early 20th-century sports programs are appreciated for their unique art and design, reflective of the era’s aesthetic.
For a baseball memorabilia collector or a history enthusiast, a 1920 World Series program from the games held in Brooklyn would be a treasured item, offering a tangible connection to a bygone era of baseball.
Original footnote: Original program has been scored in pencil to reflect Game (1) which was played at Ebbets Field and won by Cleveland. Nice eye appeal with scattered wear including some light toning and scattered wrinkles. There are a few vertical creases. It appears that the staples have been replaced and the scorecard page has a small reenforcement added in the stapled area: GD/VG
