Title
Where Do I Go Next?
Artist
KC Pollak
Medium
Painting - Alcohol Ink On Graphix Paper
Description
This piece came from a place of frustration. It started out as something entirely different. It was dense with color and an experiment that I had tried failed completely. However, I liked the colors that I had chosen. Then I asked the question ‘Where do I go next?’. I couldn’t throw it away. There was far too much in on the paper to try to wipe off. It would have been a monumental mess of grand proportions. I started thinking about my question again ‘where do I go next?’ and started heading towards that. I started creating patches of white space by using isopropyl alcohol to remove ink from areas. I started going in four directions with it. Before I knew it, I had a piece that is pulling the eye in those different directions. It took me a couple of days of working off and on with it. I still wasn’t sure about it. I took a picture of it and asked a few people what they thought of it. I had been way too close to it and had lost perspective and direction. A lot of folks really liked it. A lot! Paint brush down. I called it finished. What began as a mistake resulted in a very nice piece. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that you never throw away a fail (or what I perceive as a fail). I now set them aside and circle back around to it another day. Something always pops out. And if it doesn’t, I use it as an experimentation piece. To try new techniques and ideas. Nothing goes to waste in my studio. Even uncertainty. Especially uncertainty. I hope this piece helps you pull your room or space together. Or, I hope it helps the space look like it’s expanding into new directions.
As a final thought, I get all my colors ideas from the area in which I live, Western Colorado, at the base of Buckhorn Mountain. The sky and colors of the mountains and sunrises and sunsets are different every minute of every day. If I'm ever at a loss for what colors to use I look outside and find them. Every time. Colorado is an endless inspiration for my art.
