Description
This lonely, lovely society garlic flower was found growing up a stucco wall in a courtyard garden in the lovely coastal city of Charleston, South Carolina. Its soft violet color and simplicity immediately attracted me to take this image.
Society garlic is an attractive ornamental plant from South Africa whose leaves have a garlicky odor. It's often used as a foundation plant or along walkways. Along with onions and garlic, Society garlic is a member of the lily family, but it is a different genus, Tulbaghia, entirely restricted to Africa, and includes about 24 species. The species name violacea refers to the flower color, variously described as lilac, lilac-blue, pink, purplish-violet or violet. The common name, society garlic, probably refers to the plant’s clump-forming habit and garlic-smelling leaves.
