Description
Personally, Waiyaki Wa Hinga is a name I connect with at a very deep level. I was brought up in Kikuyu in Kiambu County, Kenya. I started my Schooling in a famous elementary mission school by the Name THOGOTO. I went to School with so many young men and women bearing the Name of Waiyaki wa Hinga. For me this great grandfather is not just a legend but a neighbor. His life story has given me so much strength in believing the reality of our legendary Heroes of Kenya my Home land.
Waiyaki had about ten wives and so his family has grown into an Army. His roots have spread so wide it is impossible to forget that name. Many from several towns in Kiambu can attest to this. From Kikiyu town, to Regen, to Kinoo, to Gichungo, to Uthiru, to Dagoretti, Waiyaki is all over. This fact is also cemented by the naming of (Waiyaki way) a cosmopolitan road leading to the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi. If Waiyaki wa Hinga was to wake up today and sound the war horn, he will have an Army of countless warriors answer his call! “Kuuma Ngong'u nginya Karîma tûra” I won't translate, if you know you know.
As an Artist, I aim to bring out these strong and mighty heroes of Kenya and indeed Africa, to portray them in their youthful days and show their vitality for the world to see. I normally don’t dwell on negativity, I look for the bright moments in their lives that is of utmost importance to the modern generations.
Waiyaki Wa Hinga was the ruler of South Gikuyu. If the truth be told, Waiyaki’s real name was Koiyaki and his father’s name was Kumale ole Lemotaka, from Laikipia. Waiyaki wa Hinga was a leading personality in people’s resistance against the British invasion and occupation of Southern Gikuyuland – Kabete. He was one of the several chiefs who had acquired feudal lordship in Gikuyuland in the nineteenth century.
Due to his Kikuyu and Maasai roots, Waiyaki could speak both languages fluently and indeed was aware of the two cultures inherently. He was therefore able to know the secrets of both the communities. Thus bearing the name WAIYAKI wa HINGA which means WAIYAKI of the HYPOCRITES. These were secret keepers or Double agents whenever it was necessary.
On the World Wide Web and in many history books there is a lot written about Waiyaki wa Hinga. I won’t belabor his history on this forum, I will however invite you to read about this great Hero on the internet and history books; get a feel of who he really was, how he made history and eventually how he died.
Waiyaki wa Hinga (Koiyak ole Kamule); another great human being that the world will not be forgetting soon.
