Description
Civita di Bagnoregio near Rome and Orvieto in Italy is an ancient but complicated place. It was founded by the Etruscans more than 2500 years ago, selected for its high ground location. But since it is built on “tuff” (volcanic rock over a bed of soft clay and sand) and it’s in an area subject to earthquakes and healthy rain amounts, bits of the town have been sliding down into the valley ever since. There was a major earthquake in 1695 that accelerated the erosion as well as out-migration from the town. The bridge that connected Civita to Bagnoregio was bombed during World War II and a new bridge had to be built. A series of landslides in 2014 and 2015 saw some other medieval properties plummet into the valleys. Civita di Bagnoregio became known as The Dying Town, with a permanent population of only 10. But a fee of 3 euro to enter the town has helped in fund preservation efforts and has succeeded in abolishing communal taxes and abolishing unemployment in Bagnoregio. However, a town that exists only as a tourist haven without many residents is a rather bizarre concept to me. It is almost Disney-like, and not in a good way! Wandering the streets on an early winter morning was like being in a ghost town. The most romantic view is the one from across the valley from the Belvedere in Bagnoregio.

Very nice image, interesting story. Yes, it is odd visiting a town that is largely for the tourists, though I have never been to one as depopulated as this one. I have been to Chora, the "capital" of the Greek island of Alonissos, whihc was hit by an earthquake in the the 1960's, and the people moved out. But that is slowly reviving, partly through tourism, but also because expats have bought and renovated houses.
