Description
"Underbelly" gives us another unique view a Rufous hummingbird in flight! Like "Side Slip" the tail feathers are fully spread, but in this case it's because this baby was slowing down to land on my bird feeder.
The hard part in photographing hummingbirds is timing their arrival into the space where you have your camera focused. This is one of those truly rare images where all factors came together in that 1/2000th of second that hummingbird photographs are taken in. The dark sky above is actually daylight, but because the shutter is only open so briefly not much light from the sky is being collected. There is enough detail in the feathers be able to identify this Rufous from others in my collection because of the notches in the wing and tail feathers accumulated during their energetic lives.
