On February 16, 2002 I went out to the Dolan Road railroad overcrossing in north Monterey County near Moss Landing. My main goal was to photograph the southbound Coast Starlight passenger train, which I did. On the radio scanner I heard that a northbound freight train was headed my way, and so I waited about 30 minutes for it to pass.
I was standing on the overpass as the train approached. I framed it in my viewfinder and suddenly the engineer blew his horn at me as if to say Hi! Startled, I jumped and almost missed the first shot.This was actually the second shot I made and it turned out the best shot of the day.
The lead locomotive UP 5353 is an EMD GP40-2.
