Description
File# 0935 A Tupolev Tu-114 Rossiya at Idlewild International Airport (JFK) in July of 1959. The Tu-114 having had its first flight November 15, 1957 was displayed in conjunction with a Soviet Trade Exposition being held in Manhattan.
The NATO Code 'Cleat', with its unique combination of turboprop power ans swept-back wings, the Tu-114 was a flying giant of the 1950s. this transport was the largest, heaviest and longest range civil aircraft of its era, Despite having propellers, it regularly cruised almost as fast as the newer swept-wing jets. In many respects, this was a 'jumbo jet', and was the heaviest aircraft before the advent of the Boeing 747.
The New York City visit was the first time a Soviet aircraft flew into and landed in the United States.
This particular aircraft will be back in September, 1959, bringing Premier Nikita Khrushchev to the United States to address the United Nations and tour the country at the invitation of President Eisenhower.
