Description
Probably the most revered of all former Padre players, Tony Gwynn played his entire career from 1982 to 2001 with the San Diego Padres. A left handed hitter he won eight batting titles that tied for the most in National League history. He had a career batting average of .338 never getting lower that .309 in a season. In 1994 he batted a career high .394 in a strike shorten season. He was a 15 time All Star, with seven Silver Slugger Awards and five Golden Glove Awards as an outfielder. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. He died in 2014 at the age of 54 of salivary gland cancer attributed to chewing tobacco.
