A timber wolf, also known as the gray wolf, stands panting in a field in Bear Country located in Rapid City, South Dakota. The timber wolf is the largest wild member of the dog family. They have large canine teeth and powerful jaws and can chase down prey at a speed of 37 miles per hour. They stand about 30" tall at the shoulder and are about 6.6 feet long, including their tail. The largest wolves are found in west-central Canada, Alaska, and northern Asia. At the beginning of the 21st century, there were approximately 65,000 to 78,000 wolves in North America, with the largest number in Canada. Following that are Alaska, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
