This painting tries to be an illustration of a Balkanic legend, a Turkish legend. The story goes that the powerful Ottoman Sultan in Istambul had one of the most numerous and famous harems in the Islamic world. The women in his harem where of an exquisite beauty, cultivated and so on. But, one of the youngest favorites, taking deadly risks, had a lover outside. Some of the other women in the serail/harem knew about the affair (almost impossible to perpetrate...the significant word being "almost") but, by fear or solidarity, didn't informed their husband about it. When the powerful sultan found out, eventually, about his harem treason, he was so awfully mad that he ordered that ALL the women who knew to be strangled, wrapped and thrown in the near Marmara Sea with weights at their feet. They sat no women in the harems of the following sultans dared to cheat on their husbands afterwards, for a very long long time...
